Two fractions $\frac{a}{b}$ and $\frac{c}{d}$ are said to be equivalent if they represent the same number. In practice, that means that if they are reduced to lowest terms then you get the same result.
Two fractions can be tested to see if they are equivalent by computing $ad$ and $bc.$ If the answers are the same, the fractions are equivalent.
