Real numbers can be represented in any one of a number of ways, so the process of adding them depends on how they are specified. The real numbers might be rational numbers, or integers, in which case we can simply follow the appropriate procedures for those types of numbers. They might be decimal numbers, in which case we use a standard process for adding decimal numbers. We can also add numbers involving surds, radicals, powers, and so on. We do that by applying the general rules of algebra to rearrange and simplify.
