An "Algebraic Number" is a real number that is the solution to some polynomial equation with integer coefficients. This includes all the rational numbers, as well as square roots, cube roots, /etc.,/ and combinations of those. It is known that $\pi$ and $e$ are /not/ algebraic numbers - they are transcendental numbers.
