[[[> IMG:Euclid.jpeg ]]] Euclid, also known as Euclid of Alexandria and the "Father of Geometry", was a Greek mathematician who lived around 300BC. His book "The Elements" is described as the most successful textbook in the history of mathematics. In it, the principles of what is now called Euclidean geometry are deduced from a small collection of axioms. Euclid also wrote works on perspective, conic sections, spherical geometry, and rigour. * Proved there are infinitely many prime numbers * Worked on geometry ** now called Euclidean geometry, because there are now Non-Euclidean versions of geometry * Perfect numbers * Mersenne primes * Euclidean algorithm for finding the greatest common divisor (also called the Highest Common Factor or HCF) of two numbers. * Invented the Dedekind Cut ** (apparently in !/ "The Elements" !/ ) ---- One of the Famous People on this site.
